Port crane
Situated on the Motława River, the most characteristic monument of Gdańsk is the largest port crane in medieval Europe and at the same time a fortified water gate with two huge brick towers, which once protected the city from the harbour. Today, the majestic Żuraw, as a magnificent example of a historic port building, a witness to the power of the Hanseatic city of Gdańsk, called the granary of Europe, provides the perfect setting for the exhibition of the National Maritime Museum, whose headquarters are also located in the historic granaries located opposite – on the other side of the Motława river on Ołowianka Island.
